If you've looked around my website or my social media pages,
you probably know that I am, and have been for years, a member of Julie Hedlund's 12x12 Picture Book Challenge. If you write picture books, I recommend you check out it out! It has been instrumental to my writing and in my journey to signing with my wonderful agent, Beth Marshea, of Ladderbird Literary. How? I'm glad you asked! Recently, the good folks at 12x12 featured me on their blog where I talked about "How I Got My Agent." You can read all about it here.

Fun fact about my youngest child: he is the king of finding four (and even five) leaf clovers. Lucky kid! In celebration of St. Patrick’s Day this year, I bring to you a review of a picture book a wild boar named Roy, who LOVES clover:
Roy can hardly wait to eat his patch of clover. The problem is, while he’s waiting for it to bloom, his patch seems to get smaller and smaller. And it always seems to happen when he’s reading a book supplied by his neighbor, Jarvis. Hmmm… Roy needs to stop the clover thief before his patch completely disappears! This clever and hilarious tale is full of expressive characters, irresistible page turns, illustrated end papers, a wild boar, a gopher, books, and a twist ending you won’t see coming! I think you’ll love Elise Parsley’s HOW TO CATCH A CLOVER THIEF.

I remember how difficult bedtime could be with five children, but the Wink family has nothing on me. They have 40 Winks to put to bed each night:
I couldn’t resist reading this book by one of my favorite authors paired with one of my favorite illustrators, and it did not disappoint. This picture book has everything I love in a read-aloud: a cover that shouts, “read me!”, a clever title, a surprise illustration under the dust jacket, illustrated end papers, creative and spot-on rhyming text, an engaging storyline full of action (and about a very familiar and family-relatable topic), expressive characters, charming illustrations full of details to linger over, a call-to-reader “challenge,” and a satisfying ending that begs you to read the book again. Delightful, fun, engaging story. Loved it!

With so many people working from home these days, many will relate to this brilliantly written and illustrated picture book:
When a dad steps away from his home office (after posting an “off limits” sign on the door), a little girl can’t resist entering where she is told not to go. There’s no harm in looking, right? But what awaits inside is a treasure trove of tape and paper clips and sticky-notes. Oh, the colorful sticky-notes! This deceptively simple story captures the curiosity, energy, and creativity of a child, using brilliant page turns to build tension that leads to a surprising ending. Helen Yoon’s bright illustrations are expressive and joyful. I just want to read this book over and over—to myself or anyone who will listen (makes a great read-aloud to a group too). Brilliant!
