Arr, matey! What a fun day to celebrate. If you need some pirate fun and practice with your pirate lingo, I highly recommend you read this clever, funny book:
Captain Crave’s mum sends him a message in a bottle that includes the “Be Your Best Buccaneer Checklist.” But when Crave reads the list, he discovers he’s missing one important item: a pet. So, the captain and his crew set sail. They try a beach, a farm, and a zoo with no luck. Captain Crave is pretty particular—not just any pet will do. His pet has to be perfect. I chuckled all the way through this clever book. Beth Ferry skillfully weaves pirate-speak and pirate-jokes throughout this fabulous read-aloud. I was in hysterics when I read the lion scene! And the ending is, indeed, perfect. Matt Myers’ acrylic and oil paint illustrations are also the perfect match for the text. The characters’ expressions were priceless, from the less-than-perfect pets to the pirates to the poor landlubbers. There was so much detail in every page that each one begged me to linger. This book has hooks and peg-legs and clams and crabs and goats and geese and elephants and lions and pirates and more pirates! Set sail to read this perfect picture book!

Today I’m reviewing one of the most touching picture books I’ve ever read. I knew it was award-worthy even before it won the 2019 Golden Kite Award for Text and the 2019 Schneider Family Book Award Honor (which is why my copy doesn’t have any fancy stickers on it, since I bought it before the awards were announced). So, in honor of Grandparent’s Day, I present to you:
Those first lines draw you right in. You know right away this book is going to be special. Balloons that are filled with memories? So clever! The older you are, the more balloons you have. That means the main character’s grandfather has lots of balloons. And those are filled with stories that the boy thinks are “better than ponies and chocolate frosting.” But when Grandpa starts having problems with his balloons, the boy tries his hardest to catch them, but they always slip away. Jessie Oliveros tackles the difficult topic of memory loss in this touching story and manages to end on an uplifting note. Dana Wulfekotte’s pencil, ink, & gouache illustrations are the perfect complement to the text. I am in love with this book—a must read!
