Do know a young reader who likes to go for rides? Or who loves animals or vehicles or both? Then they’ll love:
Roar! goes the lion…or is it the truck? It’s both! Abi Cushman’s clever book will have young readers guessing what’s making the sounds on one spread, excited to turn the page, and then surprised at the reveal. With animals, vehicles, onomatopoeia, die cuts, and a wordless, visual story thread throughout the book, kids will love ANIMALS GO VROOM!

Do you love books? Me too! Here’s a picture book about a young reader who loved books so much, she got lost in them:
This adorable story is about Lila Lou who loves to read so much that she gets lost in her books. Literally! After her mom finds her, she tells Lila that she has too many books (or at least too many to fit in their house), so Lila decides to share them. Nikki Bergstresser’s text and Sejung Kim’s bright illustrations combine beautifully for a great read aloud. The book includes reader tips to help encourage making connections and engage children, a guide to building a family library, and a glossary of Spanish words used in the illustrations. If you’re looking for a book with a charming main character, a diverse cast, and a story that encourages sharing, books and reading, this is the one for you!

Support an author/illustrator today by leaving a review on Goodreads or Amazon Did you know that the North American Bison is the official National Mammal of the United States? And that you might find them at the first national park in the world, Yellowstone National Park? And that "Buddy Bison" is the mascot for the National Park Trust? Neither did I, until I read this book:
Join Christopher, Elena, Park Ranger Aunt Rosa, and Buddy on fictional adventure through Yellowstone National Park. When Aunt Rosa gets an emergency call and Christopher gets lost, Elena and her Buddy Bison must search for her brother. Along the way, they encounter geysers, thermal springs, and bison, of course. This entertaining story by Ilona Holland weaves interesting Yellowstone and bison facts that are accompanied by breathtaking photographs, as only National Geographic can do. Supplementary back matter includes a map and brief history of Yellowstone, tips on park preservation, and facts about bison, geysers, and more. A forward by Gilbert Grosvenor, Chairman Emeritus of National Geographic Society, encourages young readers to learn about and become more involved with their parks. I think after reading BUDDY BISON’S YELLOWSTONE ADVENTURE, young readers will do just that!

In 1605, Guy Fawkes and others plotted to blow up Britain’s parliament. But today’s review is for a picture book about a gunpowder explosion that took place in the U.S. in 1818.
This reimagined tale of the true story of the explosion at Eleutherian Mills in 1818, intended for the older elementary-aged reader, is an exciting read that combines fact with fiction. Children will want to turn every page to find out if, and how, the Du Pont family make their way to safety after a powder mill explosion. Once the fictional story ends, children will want to know more about the explosion and the Du Ponts. Fortunately, they can! The author includes several pages of back matter to supplement the text which includes details and background on each Du Pont family member, information about water power and the mills, details about the path of the “great explosion,” an explanation on the national importance of black powder, a glossary of terms, a copy of an actual letter from one of the Du Pont sisters, and resources to learn more. Ilona Holland’s suspenseful tale plus thorough back matter pair perfectly with Judy Love’s detailed, realistic illustrations that depict early 19th Century America. Looking for an exciting way to engage young readers while teaching them a bit about history? This is the book for you!

Talk about persistence paying off! That’s Tu Youyou in a nutshell. Songju Ma Daemicke’s book tells the story of how Tu Youyou experimented and experimented and experimented until she finally found success! She persevered through gender barriers (most girls in 1930s China did not go to school), biases against traditional Chinese traditional medicine (the Cultural Revolution that began in the late 1960s did not support traditional Chinese or Western cultures), and hundreds of failed experiments, to finally discover a treatment for malaria. This book shares the true story of an important woman in history in a child-friendly way while conveying themes of perseverance, persistence, belief, and altruism. Lin’s bright and expressive illustrations compliment the text beautifully. Great read!
