Everyone deserves a friend. Today’s book is about some friends who need a hug:

TITLE: GROUP HUG

AUTHOR: Jean Reidy

ILLUSTRATOR: Joey Chou

PUBLISHER: Henry Holt and Company/2021

OPENING LINES:

There once was a slug,
Needing someone to hug.
SHRUG.
Little Slug needs someone to cuddle. So, when lonely beetle comes along, Slug gives the bug a hug. Then down-in-the-dumps Mouse comes along. Then Skunk and Squirrel and…time for a group hug, of course! But when Bear arrives…well, you’ll just have to read to find out. This cumulative tale of kindness has bold and colorful illustrations, adorable characters, and rollicking text, all of which add up to great read aloud.

The creature in this book, who lives alone on the island of Habit, follows a daily routine. Until one day when a new creature arrives—maybe a new friend! But will their friendship last when the new friend doesn’t follow the routine? Find out in:
TITLE: THE CREATURE OF HABIT

AUTHOR: Jennifer E. Smith

ILLUSTRATOR: Leo Espinosa

PUBLISHER: Random House Children’s Books/2021

OPENING LINES:

On the island of Habit, there lived a creature.
He had very big teeth.
And very big eyes.
And very, very big feet.

Every day, the creature did the exact same things in the exact same order.

When I saw the cover of this book, I knew I had to read it. After I read it, I knew I had to own it. First, the art: The creatures (big and small) are quirky and adorable, and the book jacket screams, “read me!” Then (a personal favorite feature), the cover under the dust jacket reveals a different image. Careful observers will seek and find two friends, perhaps playing hide-and-seek. The artist gives more hints of what’s to come on the illustrated end papers (another personal favorite feature), with the front and back papers showing slight differences. The color palette is bright, bold, and fun and left me wanting to visit the island of Habit. Now, the text: On the surface, this story is about a big creature who never strays from his routine. When a small creature arrives, he shows the visitor how things are done. But when the new friend starts to stray from the routine, the creature of Habit does not like it one bit (“anything could happen.”). Underneath, this is a story about acceptance and friendship. It’s okay to follow a routine. It’s okay to not follow one at all. It’s okay to like what you like and it’s okay to try new things too. After all, “anything could happen,” maybe even making a new friend.
