REVIEW: IT’S CHOCOLATE CAKE DAY!

1/27/2021

I don’t need any excuse to eat chocolate, but I’m happy to eat a piece of chocolate cake to celebrate today. I was also happy to read a book about two of my favorite things—bunnies and chocolate! Here’s my review:
TITLE: BETTY BUNNY LOVES CHOCOLATE CAKE

AUTHOR: Michael B. Kaplan

ILLUSTRATOR: Stéphane Jorisch

PUBLISHER: Dial Books for Young Readers/2011

OPENING LINES:
Betty Bunny was a handful.
She knew this because her mother always said, “Betty Bunny, you are a handful.”
And her father always said, “Your mother sure is right about that.”
Betty Bunny knew that her mother and father loved her, and so being a handful must be very, very good.
Picture
Michael B. Kaplan’s opening text tells the reader what you’re in for. Betty Bunny is going to be a handful. So, it’s no surprise that she puts up a fuss when she’s asked to try something new. But when she finally tries chocolate cake, she loves it so much she decides she’s going to marry it. So much she can’t stop thinking about it. So much she wants to eat it again and again, even when her mom tells her she has to wait. Uh oh. This fun book is full of humorous text, expressive bunnies, a lesson on patience, and chocolate cake, of course!

Review: HAPPY NATIONAL HUGGING DAY!

Do you have someone in your life who gives the best hugs? I hope so! George, the little boy in this book, has Stella to give him hugs when he needs them most. After I read it, I gave the book a hug. I think you’ll want to too.

TITLE: SATURDAYS ARE FOR STELLA

AUTHOR: Candy Wellins

ILLUSTRATOR: Charlie Eve Ryan

PUBLISHER: Page Street Kids/2020

OPENING LINES:

George loved Saturdays.
Saturdays were for Stella.
George loves spending his Saturdays with Stella. They go fun places or stay home to make their own fun, buy tasty treats or make homemade cinnamon rolls, read, listen to music, or do nothing at all. Until George can’t spend his Saturdays with Stella anymore. Then George hates Saturdays. Candy Wellins’ just-right words convey all George’s emotions as he cycles from loving someone with all his heart to coping with loss to finding hope in a new future and a new someone to love, all while keeping the memories of Stella alive. Charlie Eve Ryan’s textured illustrations are soft and dreamy and capture George and his family’s expressions beautifully (and include a surprise under the jacket, which I always love!). Hugs all around for this book.

Review: HAPPY NATIONAL NOTHING DAY!

You read that right. Nothing. How do we celebrate that day? Do we do nothing? Too late, you just read what I wrote. If you care to read further, your can read my review of a story about a boy who tries to ward off boredom by celebrating a different holiday every day. Until he discovers a day with no holiday:

TITLE: NATIONAL REGULAR AVERAGE ORDINARY DAY

AUTHOR: Lisa Katzenberger

ILLUSTRATOR: Barbara Bakos

PUBLISHER: Penguin Workshop/2020

OPENING LINES:
Peter did not like being bored. It was the complete and total, absolute worst!
Hanging out with his neighbor Devin was usually pretty fun. But lately it seemed like they’d been playing the same games over and over.
Picture
I love to give a nod to all the obscure and little-known holidays out there, and the child in this story does too. Until one day he discovers there's no holiday to celebrate! What is Peter going to do? He's an imaginative kid, so he tries to make one up. His ideas become more and more outrageous, which young readers will love. Eventually he learns that every day is worth celebrating, which everyone will appreciate. This story is all about fun--fun text, fun illustrations & a fun way to show readers how to celebrate even the most regular, average, ordinary days.

    About Heather

Heather is a busy wife and mom of five rambunctious children and one lovable pup They all provide lots of distractions, but oodles of inspiration.  Sometimes the pictures and ideas in her head turn into her own children's stories, but she always makes time to read other people's books. Sometimes she reviews them here.
