I love ice cream—do you? Then I bet you’ll love this picture book:
On a hot summer day in 1850, August Jackson’s colorful hat could be seen from a block away as he strolled down Philadelphia’s cobblestone streets. He pushed his cart and sang his familiar tune: “It’s hot, hot, hot! Come on ‘n’ cool down! Ol’ Gus has the greatest ice cream in town! Got lotsa flavors, so take your pick! Step right up and take a lick!” A big shout out and thank you to the creators of this book! I had never heard of Augustus Jackson until I read this book. I learned a lot about how he altered the original egg-filled recipe to become what we know as ice cream today, sped up the production of ice cream, invented new flavors, and made ice cream more readily available to everyone, not just the wealthy. This inspiring biography is entertaining, informative and full of engaging, life-like illustrations. I scream for ice cream and the ICE CREAM MAN!
