REVIEW: IT’S NATIONAL HAMBURGER DAY!

5/28/2022

Okay, technically this picture book is about a cheeseburger, not a hamburger, but a cheeseburger is a hamburger with cheese, so close enough, right? Now that that’s settled, I can introduce you to a humorous and heartwarming story about a raccoon and a seed that he hopes will grow cheeseburgers:

TITLE: ARE YOU A CHEESEBURGER?

AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR: Monica Arnaldo

PUBLISHER: Katherine Tegen/2021

OPENING LINES:

This is Grub.
Grub is a raccoon,
And he is all by himself.
See?

And here is Seed.
Seed is a seed, of course,
And he is stuck in the trash.
Picture
One night, while Grub is rummaging through the trash looking for something to eat, he meets Seed. Seed is waiting for someone to plant him so he can start growing. Grub hopes Seed will grow “something very good and very special”—cheeseburgers! So, Grub plants Seed and they both wait. Wait to see what will happen. Though I guessed Grub might not get what he hoped for, I kept turning the pages to find out how the book would end, and the ending did not disappoint! Monica Arnaldo’s clever story of growth and friendship is full of humor and heart, a surprising yet inevitable ending, charming illustrations, and dreams of cheeseburgers! I think you’ll love ARE YOU A CHEESEBURGER? as much as I did.

REVIEW: HAPPY INTERNATIONAL BEING YOU DAY!

While I think Being You Day is a great holiday, I think being you needs to be celebrated every day, don’t you? Here’s a picture book about someone who wants to be themself:
Picture

TITLE: BLOB

AUTHOR/ILLUSTRATOR: Anne Appert

PUBLISHER: Harper Collins/2021

OPENING LINES:

This is Bob.
“Hi! Actually, it’s Blob. With an L.”
Bob is a creature of indeterminate kind.
“An ambiguous being, if you will.
Bob has a unique talent. As a blob, Bob can be whatever animal you want.
“I can?! Any animal?”
Yes. Any animal.
In this picture book, the narrator introduces the reader to a character named Bob who has the unique talent of being able to be whatever they want. But Bob isn’t Bob. Bob is Blob (with an L). And Blob gets tired of becoming different animals at the narrator’s suggestion. Blob just wants to be Blob. And there’s nothing wrong with that. This story addresses themes of staying true to yourself and reaching for your dreams, but does so without being too message-y. Anne Appert’s colorful, adorable illustrations match the fun, adorable text. I’m all for BLOB!

This book features Denis who would love this holiday. He wants to eat YOU! But, don’t worry. There is a way to avoid that. You must follow the rules:

TITLE: THE BOOK OF RULES

AUTHOR: Brian Gehrlein

ILLUSTRATOR: Tom Knight

PUBLISHER: Farrar Straus Giroux/2021

OPENING LINES:

This book has rules.
You must follow all the rules. If you break the rules, Dennis will eat you. Do you want to be gobbled by Dennis? No? Then you’ll have to listen carefully.
Picture
Denis would love to eat YOU! Not to fear. If you follow the rules, you’re in no danger. This clever book that breaks the fourth wall contains 10 basic rules the reader must follow to avoid being eaten. Brian Gehrlein’s text is fun (my favorite word is “applesauciest”), engaging, and hilarious, and Tom Knight’s illustrations are bright, colorful, and detailed. With expressive characters, a hungry (but lovable) monster, illustrated end papers, an under-the-jacket-surprise, a surprise ending, and fun-to-follow rules, this book will make an entertaining read-aloud that kids are sure to love!
