Arr, matey! What a fun day to celebrate. If you need some pirate fun and practice with your pirate lingo, I highly recommend you read this clever, funny book:
Captain Crave’s mum sends him a message in a bottle that includes the “Be Your Best Buccaneer Checklist.” But when Crave reads the list, he discovers he’s missing one important item: a pet. So, the captain and his crew set sail. They try a beach, a farm, and a zoo with no luck. Captain Crave is pretty particular—not just any pet will do. His pet has to be perfect. I chuckled all the way through this clever book. Beth Ferry skillfully weaves pirate-speak and pirate-jokes throughout this fabulous read-aloud. I was in hysterics when I read the lion scene! And the ending is, indeed, perfect. Matt Myers’ acrylic and oil paint illustrations are also the perfect match for the text. The characters’ expressions were priceless, from the less-than-perfect pets to the pirates to the poor landlubbers. There was so much detail in every page that each one begged me to linger. This book has hooks and peg-legs and clams and crabs and goats and geese and elephants and lions and pirates and more pirates! Set sail to read this perfect picture book!
